How Long Do I Have to File an SR22 Insurance in Wyoming For DUI Conviction?
Reader’s Question:
I live in Cheyenne, Wyoming, how long do I have to file an SR22 insurance? What is the best insurance company offering sr22 coverage?
Kelly
Cheyenne, WY
The WY Department of Transportation (DOT) provides information on their requirement for the SR-22 insurance by stating that an SR-22 is an insurance form that comes from your insurance carrier and is filed with the state.
According to the Wyoming DOT you may need to start filing your SR-22 insurance before your suspension is over or your registration will be suspended if the SR-22 insurance is not on file. If you have any cars that are registered under your name only that someone else is going to operate, the SR-22 must be on file.
You do not need to file the SR-22 insurance in Cheyenne Wyoming until the end of your suspension if this is not the case. It is best to begin the process at least three weeks before the SR-22 insurance is needed because it can take the insurance carriers 2-3 weeks to file the SR-22 insurance. If the SR-22 insurance is not on file by the end of your mandatory suspension, you will stay suspended until the SR-22 insurance is on file.
If you do not own a car then if you will be driving car for work, you can check if your employer’s insurance carrier will file an SR-22 insurance for you. If not, you can obtain a non-owner’s insurance policy that would cover you for whatever car you operate.
How Long Do I Have to Carry SR22 in Rhode Island?
Reader’s Question:
I live in Cranston Rhode Island and I would like to know how long are you required to carry an SR-22 insurance here?
Tom
The SR22 insurance filing requirement period differs in Cranston RI because it is set by the court when you are convicted of certain violations.
Typically, the amount of time one will be required to carry a SR-22 filing is 3 years but in Rhode Island since the court sets the time period it may be the standard three years or a different period of time. To know exactly the length of time the court determined for you in your specific case you should be able to contact the Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles or read over your court papers to check if they say how long a financial responsibility certificate must be filed.
If you find out that the time period to carry your SR-22 is up and the state of RI is no longer requiring you to maintain it then the Department of Motor Vehicle or Rhode Island insurance regulator should be able to advise you what steps you have to take so that you can take off the SR22 certificate / form from your car insurance policy. An insurance carrier will usually want proof that the SR22 can be canceled and will no longer have to be filed on your behalf to the state.
