Reader’s Question:
I was charged of Driving under the Influence (DUI) some time ago and I was required then to carry an SR-22 form for one year. I just recently found that my home state Connecticut does not require me to maintain SR-22 anymore. I contacted my auto insurance company in Greenwich, Connecticut about this and they told me I need to get a letter from the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). I am confused on why my auto insurance company continues to charge me even if I am not legally required to maintain SR-22?

It appears to me that your auto insurance company follows its company’s guideline in reliving your responsibility in carrying SR-22. According to my uncle who is an auto insurance agent here in Greenwich, Connecticut, this is practiced by car insurance companies to prevent policyholders from removing their SR-22 earlier than the required period of time. Because, if a violator failed to maintain SR-22 certificate during the required time, his or her license will be taken away for failing to meet such requirement.
What I would suggest you to do is to contact the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and ask for the notification or letter stating that you are not required to carry SR-22 form. The CT DMV would be able to give you the requirement you need to relieve you of your responsibility in maintaining an SR-22 form. Once you removed the SR-22 certificate, your car insurance company will notify the Connecticut DMV through filing of SR-26. You can also ask your auto insurance agent in Greenwich, Connecticut to better assist you with your concern.
