Lapse in auto insurance is defined by the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) as having a vehicle that is not covered by auto insurance for 10 days or more. As you see, auto insurance is required in your home state. All vehicles, whether it’s owned or leased, are required to maintain liability insurance coverage. This liability insurance on your vehicle gives you the right to legally drives your car, register you vehicle for you to obtain a GA license plates, and even replace and/or transfer your GA license tags.
Your auto insurance company is required to electronically report information regarding your insurance to Georgia DOR and that’s including information if your insurance had lapsed or not. Once Georgia DOR found that you have lapsed on your car insurance then you would be receiving a Notice of Lapse Mandatory Liability Insurance Coverage from them. Included with this notice is the request for a payment from you amounting to $25 (lapse fee) and requirement for you to provide a proof that you have a valid insurance policy within the next 30 days.
Your vehicle’s registration will be suspended if no payment is made for the said fine within the 30 days from the date of the letter. You will also be asked to pay an additional $60 reinstatement fee aside from the $25 lapse fee.
