Buy Sr22 Insurance
Reader’s Question:
I’m doing some reading about car insurance stuff and I read something about Sr22 insurance. I also read that not everyone is required to buy Sr22 insurance. My question is, when will you be required to purchase this kind of insurance?

That’s correct Raffy. Not everyone is required to buy Sr22 insurance, in fact not all states are required to have this kind of insurance. Now, the big question is what is Sr22 insurance?
Sr22 insurance is a form that provides proof that you have an existing auto insurance coverage. If you get caught driving without car insurance, you will be required to buy Sr22 insurance and you have no choice by the way not to get one. You will be asked to keep Sr22 insurance for a specified period of time but usually it’s for a period of three years.
In most cases, a person if required to buy Sr22 insurance for: a DWI or DUI conviction; vehicular accidents where the person is at-fault; several traffic violations; or a license that is suspended or revoked.
There are five states that do not require SR22 insurance: Delaware (DE), Kentucky (KY), Minnesota (MN), New Mexico (NM), Oklahoma (OK) and Pennsylvania (PA).
But if you are required to keep Sr22 insurance and you moved to those states, you are still required to maintain your Sr22 insurance on the specified period that you are required to do so. So let’s say, you are required to keep Sr22 insurance for a period of three years in MA and you moved to NM, then that does not change anything. You still have to keep your Sr22 insurance.
