Car Insurance Rate Minnesota MN

Reader’s Question:

I am confused with auto insurance rate in Minnesota. Is it possible that a car insurance agent can set a policyholder’s auto insurance premium and increased it for just merely suspecting that the policyholder had a minor traffic violation? And since it’s only a suspicion, as expected, there wouldn’t be any traffic tickets at all to back it up. Can someone help me with this? Can that be done?

Auto insurance rates are regulated in Minnesota through the Minnesota Department of Commerce Insurance Division. Car insurance companies filed their company’s rules and rates to this department.

The role of a car insurance agent is to follow the insurance company’s rules and rates. It is not a car insurance agent’s responsibility or job to increase a policyholder’s auto insurance rate for whatever reasons. Thus, this answers your question. Whether it’s just merely a suspicion on the car insurance agent’s part that there was a traffic violation committed by the policyholder or even if there is as supported by documents, this does not change the fact that car insurance agent CANNOT increase a person’s auto insurance premium.

I hope I was able to help you with your question. If you have other questions regarding car insurance rate in Minnesota, you can always contact the MN Department of Commerce Insurance Division.
