Reader’s Question:

Is SR 22 a type of car insurance? I need to get one from my insurer and I hope you can help me on how to go about the process. Thanks

SR 22 car insurance is not exactly a type of insurance. It is more of a bond issued by a motor vehicle insurance firm as requested by your state’s motor vehicle department. SR 22 car insurance verifies and proves that you are aware of your financial responsibilities. It is often issued to those who have been caught driving without the necessary insurance coverage as well as motorist who were not able to provide proof of coverage in the unfortunate event of a road accident. Some of the states in the US require that SR 22 car insurance be issued to a driver caught for DUI.

You can request for SR 22 from your insurer. However you have to take note that SR 22 is not given by all vehicle insurance companies because this is only given to high risk drivers. The insurance company will then contact your state’s department of motor vehicles and arrange the SR 22. You have to carry the SR 22 every time you drive a car for the next 3 years.

Reader’s Question:

How do I get the best SR22 insurance policy?

Josie

First of all, what is an SR22 insurance policy? It is a high-risk auto insurance policy that is given to a driver whose driving privileges have been suspended or revoked. Drivers who have been caught driving under the influence of alcohol or motoring with a lapsed car insurance policy are the most common candidates for this type of policy.

A “suspended” driver must file an SR22 certificate to assume financial responsibility for the violation he has committed. An insurance company must officially file the SR22 with the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles on his behalf to remove the suspension and reinstate his driving privileges. By filing an SR22 certificate, the driver proves that an insurance firm has issued him liability coverage for his vehicle. However, the driver must keep his SR22 policy for a minimum of three years from the date the driving privileges were restored.

Since the filing of an SR22 is a must in almost all states, you may find that getting the best SR22 insurance can be quite tedious and confusing. After all, there will be a lot of insurance brokers who will prey on your unfortunate situation by promising you things that may not necessarily be true. Here are some pieces of advice that you may use for guidance in shopping for the best SR22 insurance policy:

1.) Get as many SR22 quotes as you can. Since a lot of companies will be clamoring to get your business, they will also try to make their rates as competitive as possible. Use this to your advantage, instead of settling for the first policy offered to you. Don’t give in to desperation.
2.) The best SR22 insurance policy is not the cheapest but the one that can offer you the most protection. Look closely at the terms and conditions, coverage amounts, premium payments, and the like before you sign on to the company.
