Reader’s Question:

I just moved here in Florida. I am about to get my auto insurance and I’m doing some research on it. I heard from my cousin that as a Florida resident, I am only required by law to purchase auto insurance coverage for Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL). Is that correct? Can car insurance agents or companies require me to purchase additional car insurance coverage aside from PDL or PIP? I am from Kendale Lakes-Lindgren Acres, Florida to be exact.

Yes Gwendolyn, that is absolutely correct!

If you own a vehicle in Florida that has four or more wheels and that is registered and licensed in Florida then you must have auto insurance coverage for Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL). The state required limits for PDL is $10,000 and for PIP is also $10,000.

Now as to your second question, the Florida state law DOES NOT requires its residents to purchase additional car insurance policy. What is required by law is to purchase PDL and PIP only. It is strictly prohibited by the law in Florida for car insurance agents or companies to require its policyholders in adding optional coverage. It can be offered but is not required.

For more information about auto insurance in, you can ask your car insurance agent or the Florida Department of Financial Services.
