Reader’s Question:

What is an SR22 and why do I need to get one? I’m from out of state and has recently had my license revoked here in Bloomington, Illinois and this is the first time I’ve heard of an SR22.

An SR22 form is a form filed by your Car Insurance Provider in Illinois. It shows that you as a car owner have proof of financial responsibility, which really means that you are covered by sufficient insurance protection. An SR22 is required by the State of Illinois for individual involved in moving violations, has been pulled over for speeding or proven to be at-fault in a car accident or proven to be guilty of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or some form of substance that jeopardizes personal and public safety. You should get in touch with your car insurance provider there in Bloomington as to the exact processes or paperwork you will need to do so they can file your SR22 for you. Only an authorized insurance Provider or some other authorized service provider can file this for you. You will also need to maintain this SR22 for about two or three years, as well as prove that you have been a good driver since then in which case you may no longer be required to carry an SR22.

Once you file for an SR22, your insurance agent will forward this request to a central office in Springfield, to be sent to the office of the secretary of state. This may take up to 30 days and once accepted, you will receive a copy of the SR22 and a letter from the secretary of state. You can now use these to facilitate getting your license back. You do have to at least renew 45 days before the expiration date of your SR22, if its determined that you need to carry it further or moving to another state, to avoid cancellation and unnecessary hassles in your end.
