Reader’s Question:

I’m a new driver. I heard from a cousin that if I received traffic ticket then I could enroll in defensive driving courses to remove citation from my driving record in Plano, Texas. How true is this? Can anyone enroll on those classes?

Nice question Morgan. For you to qualify in taking defensive driving course there are requirements that must be met according to the Plano Municipal Court:

  • You must have a valid Driver’s License (from Texas);
  • You must have insurance or a proof of financial responsibility
  • You are not charged of over speeding (25 miles or beyond the speed limit);
  • You must enter a guilty plea for the citation;
  • You must pay State Costs and Administrative Fee of $109.00 or $134.00 (which depends if the violation happened in a school zone) and;
  • You must not have taken the class for the last 12 months.

The good thing about enrolling in a defensive driving class is that it does only remove your traffic citation but also qualifies you to get a discount on your insurance rates. Check with your Texas Department of Safety for additional information on how you can take advantage of enrolling in a defensive driving class.
