Reader’s Question:

My boyfriend lives in Brownsville, Texas. He was driving in Massachusetts and received a violation for over speeding. Is this violation going to reflect on his driving record even if this is an out-of-state violation? Is this going to increase his car insurance rate in Brownsville, Texas?

Mary

Brownsville, Texas

Your home state Texas is a member of both the both the Drivers License Compact (DLC) and Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC). On the other hand there are only five states that are not members of DLC, Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Massachusetts and the state where your boyfriend received his violation – Wisconsin.

However, don’t take it as a good sign. This does not necessarily mean that it will not show on your boyfriend’s driving record. As you see, although MA is not a member of DLC, they still have agreement with other states to exchange information regarding traffic violators. But, the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles or RMV, does not list on which states they have agreement with. So, when your boyfriend paid for his fine, it’s best that he asks the clerk court for him to find out if his violation will reflect on his driving record.

I would suggest that your boyfriend pays his fine ASAP. Both states (Texas and Massachusetts) are members of the Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC).
Which means failing to pay his fine, would result to the suspension of his driver’s license.

For your second question, usually being charged for over speeding would result in an increase on your auto insurance rates. Because, driving record is one of the major factors that affects car insurance premium. So, it would be best if you ask your car insurance agent in Brownsville for additional information. And if it’s way too high for you, then start shopping now for car insurance rates in your area through websites.
