Reader’s Question:

How many years do I have to carry SR-22 car insurance in Texas?

Jay

Dallas, TX

For SR-22 auto insurance it is normally two years required to carry and maintain this.

An SR-22 car insurance policy is a form of insurance that proves insurance to the TX Department of Public Safety (DPS) as required by Texas law. It is not necessarily a high risk insurance. It is an automobile insurance which requires the insurance carrier to certify auto insurance coverage to Department of Public Safety, and the insurance carrier must inform DPS anytime the car insurance policy is canceled, terminated or lapses.

The Texas Department of Public Safety states that the SR-22 car insurance is required for a period of two years from the date of the accident, date the judgment was rendered or date of conviction.

You do not need to own a vehicle to purchase this kind of car insurance. If you do not own a vehicle, you may contact an insurance carrier and speak to them about a non-owner SR-22. You do need to get the car insurance policy and SR22 certificate from an insurance company who is authorized to do business for the State of Texas.

A car insurance is not acceptable proof of insurance when a SR22 insurance is required. When proof of financial responsibility is required, form SR-22 certificate must be filed to meet the compliance requirements Texas.
