Reader’s Question:

I am about to buy a new car in Pennsylvania. Is there such thing as grace period for getting auto insurance policy after I purchase my new car? I mean, if let’s say I already bought my own car, would I be given enough time for me to choose auto insurance for my vehicle? I am from Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Christopher

I came across the Pennsylvania Driver and Vehicle Services’ fact sheet and read some useful information about your question. What I learned is that, to extend the coverage of an existing auto insurance policy to the new vehicle, it is the responsibility of the applicant to notify or contact his or her auto insurance agent within one month (or 30 days) from the date of the purchase. So with this, I am assuming that you have a grace period of 1 month from the time you bought your new car.

However, if I were in your position I would not rely too much on the grace period. There is still a gray area whether there is really a grace period or not. I would suggest you contact the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to better clarify this matter. Because as per PennDOT, they can still cancel a vehicle’s registration or driver’s license of a person if no insurance is maintained on the vehicle.

I would also say its best you contact your auto insurance agent in Scranton, Pennsylvania ASAP so you could extend the car insurance coverage on your new vehicle. If you are looking for new car insurance premium you can also use our website.
