Reader’s Question:

I live in Mississippi and I just want to know how long do I have to carry an sr22 after conviction for DUI?

Gerry

Thank you for asking Gerry.

In Mississippi A DUI conviction can result in fines, jail time, mandatory participation in alcohol education programs and much more in a court case. In addition to that, the MS Department of Motor Vehicles can suspend or revoked the individual’s license for a period of time.

Once an individual is convicted of DUI or Driving Under the Influence in Mississippi, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) requires a proof of financial responsibility or what is commonly called an SR-22 auto insurance policy. This financial certificate or SR-22 must be maintained for a period of 3 years.

After the 3 year typically the DUI conviction is removed from the record of the motorist for insurance purposes. The DUI , however will stay on the person’s driving history for 5 years for court and punishment purposes.

Goodluck!
