Reader’s Question:

I am aware of the financial responsibility law in California. And to meet the requirement for financial responsibility law I purchased auto insurance. Now, I am wondering when should I show proof that I have auto insurance in East San Gabriel Valley, California?

East San Gabriel Valley, CA

According to the State of California Department of Insurance Fact Sheet that I’ve read, there are four instances wherein you may be asked to show proof of auto insurance:

First, when you are stopped by a law enforcement officer and asked for the proof of auto insurance to be shown;

Second, when you are involved in a vehicular accident;

Third, when you register your vehicle or have the registration renewed; and

Lastly, when your vehicle is inspected.

If you (or any person driving the car) failed to provide proof of auto insurance on the above mentioned reasons, he or she may be asked to pay fines and other penalties may apply.

For more information about auto insurance law in California, you can ask the Department of Insurance. Also, you can seek the help of your auto insurance agent for other questions regarding car insurance in your area.
