Reader’s Question:

Is SR 22 a type of car insurance? I need to get one from my insurer and I hope you can help me on how to go about the process. Thanks

SR 22 car insurance is not exactly a type of insurance. It is more of a bond issued by a motor vehicle insurance firm as requested by your state’s motor vehicle department. SR 22 car insurance verifies and proves that you are aware of your financial responsibilities. It is often issued to those who have been caught driving without the necessary insurance coverage as well as motorist who were not able to provide proof of coverage in the unfortunate event of a road accident. Some of the states in the US require that SR 22 car insurance be issued to a driver caught for DUI.

You can request for SR 22 from your insurer. However you have to take note that SR 22 is not given by all vehicle insurance companies because this is only given to high risk drivers. The insurance company will then contact your state’s department of motor vehicles and arrange the SR 22. You have to carry the SR 22 every time you drive a car for the next 3 years.
