Before I tell if you need SR22 insurance California or not let me just give you a little information about SR22 insurance.

If your license is suspended by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), you need to get SR22 insurance California. An SR22 is a form or document that needs to be filed by your car insurance company to CA DMV as a proof that you have met the required car insurance in the state of California.

In most cases, driving privileges may be suspended because of:

  • Drunk driving
  • Several moving violations in a period of one year
  • Fines that you were unable to pay or parking violations
  • Driving without car insurance
  • Disobeying the CA DMV rules and regulations

To have your license reinstated, your SR22 insurance needs to be filed by your own car insurance company. To get SR22 insurance, you need to get car insurance policy first that meets the required limits for the state of California. You need to be careful not to let your car insurance lapse because if it does, your auto insurance company will inform the CA Department of Motor Vehicles. And as a result, the CA DMV will again suspend your license.

The period where you need to keep SR22 insurance depends on the seriousness of your traffic violation. However, in most cases it is for a period of three (3) years.
