Reader’s Question:

I heard about this cheap auto insurance policy known as dollar-a-day policy in New Jersey from my friend. With the economic crisis that we are facing right now, I am very much interested in getting this kind of car insurance policy. How can I get it? Are there any kinds of qualification? Can you tell me more about this? How cheap is this car insurance really?

The Special Automobile Insurance Policy (SAIP) or more commonly known as dollar-a-day or is designed to help inadequate car insurance coverage be available to drivers of New Jersey. This auto insurance policy is available to drivers who are qualified for Federal Medicaid plus hospitalization.

This policy provides immediate medical treatment after a vehicular accident and even treatment for serious injuries on the spinal cord and brain. The limit for this is up to $250,000. In addition, it also offers death benefit amounting to $10,000.

This however, does not cover treatment that are considered outpatient like visit of a doctor by Medicaid, damage on another person or property as a result of your fault or even damages incurred on your own vehicle.

As to your question on how much this is, it’s $365, that’ why it’s called as dollar-a-day. This policy is cheaper by $5.00 if you opted to pay upfront. For one time upfront payment it only costs $360.00. Whereas, for two installments, it costs $365 total.

If you are interested in getting this king of auto insurance policy, contact your car insurance agent in New Jersey or the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

Am I Required to Be Under My Parent’s Auto Insurance Policy?

Reader’s Question:

I am 18 years old. At present, I am under my parent’s auto insurance policy. I am curious, is it a must that I am listed under their policy? Is there an option that I could purchase my own auto insurance policy? What if I am going to drive their cars and will be driving my own car too at the same time? How would that work? By the way, I am from Deerfield Beach, Florida.

If you are going to register your own vehicle, then you can definitely purchase your own auto insurance policy. And to answer your question, it is a common practice among car insurance companies that they list the name of all the persons living in the same household with the policyholder. Generally, insurers do this to make sure they got the name of all possible users of the vehicle/s being insured. So given this, it’s only expected that you will be included on your parent’s auto insurance policy if you live with them.

Additionally, if you will still be using your parents’ car and at the same time you will be using yours, it appears to me that you will still be listed under your parents’ policy too as one of the users of their car/s and also under your own car insurance policy. To know exactly on how you can get you own auto insurance policy, ask your car insurance agent in Deerfield Beach.
