<strong>Reader’s Question:

I am from Elizabeth, New Jersey. I got 0 demerit point on my driving record but have 9 insurance points for driving while my license is suspended. That happened about 2 years ago. I am wondering, when are these 9 insurance points be removed?

According to the New Jersey Administrative Code of 11:3-34.5, car insurance points are accumulated due to suspensions, convictions, revocations and determinations of responsibility for civil violations.

If a driver is convicted of a traffic violation, both your home state Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and your insurance company would assign points and surcharges if applicable. Insurance eligibility points or insurance points are points applied by the car insurance companies to their policyholders.

From what I read from New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance fact page, insurance eligibility points are dropped off once the incident or violation in your case goes beyond the 3-year period. So from this, I think that insurance points are kept for a period of 3 years.

For additional information about insurance points in NJ, I would recommend asking your auto insurance agent.
