Reader’s Question:

I live in Iowa. I have a boyfriend that needs to get SR22 insurance here. I am quite confused. When do you need SR22 insurance in Iowa?

Iowa City, IA

Interesting question.

Well, not everyone needs to get SR22 insurance. That’s what I always told to my friends whenever they asked me about SR22 insurance stuff.

As to your question on when do you need SR22 insurance in Iowa, you need to provide proof of financial responsibility to have your license reinstated if you caused an accident to another party that exceeds the amount of $1000.

And one way of providing your financial responsibility is to get car insurance liability coverage. To have your license reinstated, your car insurance company (that is licensed by the state of Iowa to conduct business here) needs to file SR22 insurance to the Office of Driver Services. This is an insurance form that proves you have car insurance coverage in Iowa.

However, there are other ways of proving your financial responsibility like but not limited to:

  • Filing an agreement saying that you will be paying the damaged party on an installment plan
  • Getting a release from the party that was/were injured or damaged in the accident
  • Postal money order, cashier’s check, bank draft, post cash, all payable to the Iowa Office of Driver Services

For more information on when do you need SR22 insurance in Iowa, you may wish to ask your auto insurance agent in your area. You can also check with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
